Leduc Square Dancers Help Keep STARS in the Sky
Leduc, Alberta - March 25, 2019 - The Leduc Square Dance Club raised $2,886.00 at its twenty-first annual STARS Benefit Dance held Monday at Telford House (4907-46 St, Leduc, AB T9E 5V9). This is the highest annual amount the club has raised, adding to its previous donations of $26,995.51 for a lifetime total of just under thirty thousand dollars. The special amount on Monday was due in part to a $550 donation from the now-closed Forester Camping Club of Leduc.

“This was an amazing event,” said Sheyanne Levall-Crouse, Development Officer of Events for the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS). “We are truly grateful for everything your club has done.” Levall-Crouse said that each mission costs an average of $5400. “So your club has saved five lives. And because a mission has wide importance, you have helped five families, affected five sets of friends and five communities.”
Around 35 people attended, with dancers largely from the Edmonton area and as far away as Lacombe. In addition to the dancers, a dozen or so non-dancing visitors from the Leduc area came to support STARS, enjoy the music, and check out the fun activity of modern square dance. The club has recently experienced significant growth in membership, especially among younger people.
“What we do, square dancing and choreographed ballroom dancing, is a lot of fun,” said club president Ron McIntosh. “It's a social activity, movement to music, great light exercise. And our club is part of the community, our STARS dance reflects our involvement.” The club's caller couple is Dave and Doreen Kurney, of Millet.
The Leduc Happy Homesteaders Square Dance Club was formed in 1980 in New Sarepta. In addition to regular weekly dances for members, the club entertains each Christmas at various seniors centres and sponsors a fall Hoedown in support of the Leduc & District Food Bank. The group recently received a grant from the City of Leduc to help promote its activities.
